A mother and her young son escaped serious injury Wednesday after a construction crane snapped and fell on their sedan as they drove on the Alma Street on-ramp to Highway 87 in San Jose.

Their identities and ages were not released.

The green sedan was heading north to Highway 87 about 2 p.m. when a 100-foot section of a crane off the freeway snapped and smashed into the back seat of the car, California Highway Patrol Officer Steve Perea said. No one was sitting in the back seat. The woman complained of minor pain and was taken to a hospital. Her son did not suffer any injuries, but was taken to the hospital for observation.

Perea said he did not know the name of the company working on the expansion of the freeway, or whether anyone was operating the crane at the time. Cal-OSHA is investigating the incident."
