Yahoo! News/Reuters: India officials investigate caste based discrimination
Patna, India- India officials are investigating reports that villagers stopped a school lunch program when two Yadavs of a cow herding caste forced a government school to stop serving federally mandated lunches after they found out Dalit women had been hired to make the rice puddings, local newspapers said.
Although caste discrimination is outlawed, some Indians regard Dalits which comprise more than 16 percent of the country's one billion plus people- as less than human, and abuse and even murder are still common.
In Bihar state, hundreds of people have died in caste wars in recent decades.
